The life of Robert Casadesus

Robert Casadesus was one of the foremost French pianist of the 20th century. He was born to a family of musicians, in Paris, on 7 April 1899. He won a first prize for piano at the Conservatoire of Paris, at 14, and the Diémer prize in 1920. The following year, he began touring Europe. He has been the only French pianist to accomplish a half-century career around the world. His career lasted until he died in Paris, on 19 September 1972.

His discography is abundant, both in recitals and in concerts, accomplished with the greatest conductors of his time and with his usual chamber music partners, namely his wife, Gaby Casadesus, and his friend, the violonist Zino Francescatti. A composer as well, he has left us many works, which include seven symphonies, several concertos, many chamber music works and many partitions for the piano. A teacher of international renown, he has taught many years in the US and at the American Conservatoire at Fontainebleau which he also headed. The centennial of his birth will be celebrated in France and abroad, in 1999, in the form of concerts, exhibitions, and symposia organised with the Robert Casadesus association.
