A tribute to Etienne-Jules Marey
A Concert of Images and a film with music by Gréco Casadesus
Sept Mouvements de Vie reveals the scope of the world of Marey, architect of the very first moving images linked to the origin of cinema.
Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904) initiated the cinematographic movement and others fundamental techniques of motion pictures. His efforts, followed by the cinematography of the Lumière brothers, formed the basis of cinema. His innovative and visionary discoveries as well as his influence on the arts reveal him as the French 19th century Da Vinci and the creator of the first motion pictures.
Sept Mouvements de Vie is composed of seven original films, mainly from archives, edited by Sylvie-Jeanne Gander. Each of these seven movements symbolizes a unique facet of the inventor, dealing with his principle discoveries and important phases of his life: the flight of birds, the locomotion of a horse, the observation of the human body, the fluctuation of curves. The last movement is a 3D animation which transposes the discoveries of the scientist towards current and future perspectives.
Two other new sequences revealing other essential aspects of Marey's world are in preparation: 1. geometrical chronophotographs presaging Motion Capture and 2. Smoke Machines for studying aerodynamics.
The poetical music of Gréco Casadesus serves to reveal the hidden artist in Marey's work. The symbiosis of music and images links the scientific and artistic facets of this avant-garde creator.
Sept Mouvements de Vie is proposed to the public in 2 versions:
1. The Concert of Images, combining the digital projection of the 7 sequences on a giant screen in the presence of an orchestra of 40 musicians (duration: about 30 minutes)
2. The motion picture, composing the 7 sequences, to be broadcasted or projected, and accompanied by the original music, recorded by the Orchestre de la Camerata de Bourgogne (duration: about 30 minutes).
Sept Mouvements de Vie (the Symphonic Suite by Gréco Casadesus accompanied by the projection of the 7 films on a giant screen) premiered at the opening night of the Dijon International Film Festival on October 9, 2008, at the Opera de Dijon with the participation of the Orchestre de la Camerata de Bourgogne (40 musicians) directed by Jean-Christophe Ferreaux.
Sept Mouvements de Vie is an international project whose purpose is to reveal the very first images of cinema. It is proposed to orchestras wishing to expand their repertoire of multimedia projects as well as to TV networks, Cinemas and Art Institutes.
